Title 24 Part 6 Standards
Since 1977, Title 24 has significantly reduced California’s electricity costs and continues to evolve. These standards consist of three main components:
- Mandatory Requirements – Basic efficiency standards that all buildings must meet.
- Performance Standards – Compliance is demonstrated using an energy budget comparison.
- Prescriptive Package – A checklist approach to compliance.
Two Paths to Compliance
California offers two energy compliance methods:
- Prescriptive Method: A straightforward but rigid approach where each component of the building must meet specific energy requirements.
- Performance Method: Uses energy modeling software to allow trade-offs between different building components while maintaining compliance.
